The 4th Plinth Project and Anthony Gormley

Who can be represented in art? How can we make it? How can we experience it? These are questions that have exercised me for years. Whether you see the plinth as a protest or pole-dance platform; studio or stocks; playpen or pulpit; as a frame for interrogation or for meditation, it has provided an open space of possibility for many to test their sense of self and how they might communicate this to a wider world.

Antony Gormley, October 2009

When comissioned to create an artwork for the empty plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square, sculptor Antony Gormley took his opportunity and opened it up to members of the public. 35 000 people applied to be part of the project and 2400 were selected at random. They occupied the plinth in whatever fashion they chose for 60 minutes each, over 100 days. Explore the project further at http://www.oneandother.co.uk/

“Artists can have Hollywood-sized egos, too. Their star power, however, is not based on how they look, but on how they get you to look at them and their work.”

Welcome

Ann Webb

Founder and Organizer, Reel Artists Film Festival
Executive Director, Canadian Art Foundation

.

Following on last year’s successful Reel Artists Film Festival at the Alberta College
of Art + Design, we at the Canadian Art Foundation are delighted to collaborate
again this year with the Illingworth Kerr Gallery. After all, art and design are
constant journeys of exploration and revelation that unfold over time. And I have
a personal theory: that it takes at least 30 years for us to begin to understand and
appreciate the creative leaders of our era.
