Current Projects – Spring 2010

VIDEO AND SOUND

Through video I will capture reality and through animation I will reveal imagination.

Black and White

Where does life meet art?… such a huge question just like the contrast of black and white. “In the absence of light… everything is black and white. Now it is clear to me, that life is nothing more than a perplexing fantasy”.

Romeo and Juliet

Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet was the perfect choice for a kinetic text animation. The audio is from the scene in the movie when Romeo first sees Juliet, a blinding beauty in a red dress. Using abstract lines as imagery for the spoken word, the appearance of the colour red in the animation is foreshadowing the two lovers’ death. As the words write-on over the lines, Romeo’s emotional words are of romance and utter beauty.

Red (Self-Portrait)

Captured and inspired by Yves Klein’s photography, these are my some passions in my life: Snowboarding, Electronic Music, Video Shoots, Jumping, Recording, being in the park, editing… In life we need a combination of the things we are passionate about as well as activities that are physical allowing one to enjoy the outdoors. No artist can be cooped up inside all day, everyday. Jump around, get moving, do something crazy and original, not only did this help me improve my video but also it lead to me to the idea of performing…

Water

How do we feel when you go in the pool? Weightless? What about in the shower?
Water is a sensory experience, and it surrounds us all the time, not only visually, but also with an audio presence. Listening to the sounds of water, I wrote a song to express the way I feel when we take this bio element for granted. The number one killer of human life is a community’s inability to access clean water. Let us not waste water and realize that this is something that we all need to survive in all its beauty and serenity.

Cyberspace

Cyberspace, virtual reality or the realm of electronic communication. This is a narrative piece about a being who is born inside of a computer and breaks free only to dance in an abstract, geometric world clearly still virtual. The dancing female silhouette is symbolic for freedom and expression.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photo Collage

I can see with my eyes through my camera’s lens, can manipulate my world digitally.

1

From January-April 2010, metallic prints of these photos were exhibited in the Alcove Gallery in the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. For me it was a great opportunity to have the exposure as well as the chance to see other works by artists in the gallery. There are photos by Diane Bos, as well as extremely atmospheric photos taken with a pin hole camera and canadian landscape paintings. I’ve always loved seeing the art at the Jubilee and will continue to be involved in this community as I attend many of the on-going events such as ballets and plays.

Portraits

Experimentation happens when I realize that light is easily manipulated.

Bio:
My name is Alana Thorburn-Watt. I was born in Calgary and am currently still living here. During my life, I have had the opportunity to travel through student exchanges and with my family. When I was fourteen I spent 3 months living in France, and again through an exchange to Spain when I was sixteen. I traveled throughout Europe, to Africa, and to central and north America. I went to public school in the French immersion program – which was special for me because I really enjoyed learning a second language. I have spent the most time in Spain besides Canada. One day I dream of doing the Camino de Santiago with my mom.

Besides my passion for art, I have had 14 years of playing piano and studying ballet. My other hobbies include snowboarding/skiing, swimming, working with video/sound/animation, playing video games, drawing/painting, writing music, and writing poetry. I love being in school and hope for MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. My career aspirations are in the areas of visual art and design. Today I speak French and Spanish fluently and work in a European imports store. I am currently a third year media arts student at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary.
