Look.
Stop.
Breathe.

Stressed out this week? How about the next few weeks?
We can do it! Just hold on in there, it’s almost over.
Come by and take a breather. Remember all your endeavors and successes this school year. Those sleepless nights, those restless days, they didn’t held you down. Take a minute, or just a glance, celebrate.
So come see, my first installation attempt.
Enjoy the lights and the sounds.
_______
Confused as to where the installation is at?
It’s beside (right of) the stairwell doors across the elevators, from there, the empty space behind the show walls…that is where you’ll find it….My mini oasis.

One Minute movie… give or a take a few awesome seconds.
Richard Kern
April 12th, 2010 — Uncategorized
Well here is something I was hoping to write about since the beginning of the semester. And since I have time and I`m totally bored at work. Here it goes.
Lemme tell you a few things about the perviest guy to probably walk the planet next to larry flint..
This is Richard Kern.

creepy old bastard..
He`s a well known photographer and director. He was born in 1954 in North Carolina. He started taking pictures when he was 10 years old. When he went to college he started various fanzines. This later on lead him to explore film and performance art. He even stated that film and performance art were at the time faster ways to make a name for yourself. But however he explored the more sensational aspect of performance. Like he stated in this interview with vice magazine.
“I would have these performances, maybe show a film or
something, at the same venues these dancer people were
using. The first one was in a super-crowded little club and I
planted a heckler in the audience. He was standing there and
yelling at us while I had a guy doing a regular performance
dance thing. Then I had the dancer start shouting at the heckler
and it escalated. Then I ran through the crowd and started
stabbing the heckler and we had fake blood all over him, just
blood shooting up everywhere in a crowded place. It really
worked.”
Wouldn’t you like to attack your critics sometimes?
I know I would.
Richard Kern honed in on his performance art, doing more and more things for shock value. Here is another excerpt from his interview with vice magazine.
” I’d have a projector on which I’d show a wrestling film, except I had
the projector on the stage and I’d turn it around towards the
back of the room so everybody had to be turned around in their
chairs to see the movie. As soon as everyone turned around,
me and another guy came out and we just tried to kill each
other. We were fighting, and we agreed we were just going to
try to kill each other for real. We rolled out right into the crowd,
knocking shit over and chasing everybody off”
From his performance art, his film career started. Initially Kern created films to be backdrops for his performances. But eventually he had enough films to show them on their own.
Not much is really said about the content of Kern’s films..but here is an example so you can see for yourself.
This is one of his early films called Stray Dogs. As you can see the content is pretty weird and out there, and almost doesn’t make any sense. However the themes of being grotesque are present.
At this time Kern met up with another artist named Nick Zedd. Together they coined the “Cinema of Transgression”. Basically it was a group of artists that created film for shock value. Their manifest in summation was “We propose that all film schools be blown up and all boring films never be made again.” There is more to the manifesto, but this seems like the most potent part of it, and also shares the same feelings that I have towards my education..
This is one of my favorites. This film is entitled “You Killed Me First”. It’s horrible acting and badly written script almost makes fun of yourself. Also doesn’t it kinda make you think of those happy family dinners you used to have?
Mom and Dad sitting around the table discussing events of the day? And how you could’ve made that extra 20 percent on that 80 percent grade you made in Chemistry class?
Just peachy..totally peachy..
But here is one of Kern’s most famous pieces of film.
This is a hilarious one hit wonder by King Missile. The band actively sought Kern because of his filming style. As you can see the film is a literal translation of the song.
After 1992, Kern lost interest in film and started specializing in photography only. Which took on a completely different awesome realm in terms of pornography..but this is MADT..and we don’t talk about photo here.
So here it is…

Finished! Very satisfied with the result as well!
…Oh and make sure when watching the video, earphones are recommended to get the full experience.
….another thing, if you don’t get it the first time through, watch it again…this time, carefully watch out for the clues.
Anyways, enjoy! Comments and critiques are always appreciated.
